Georgia Apple Festival history: how apples came to Ellijay

The short answer

Ellijay began celebrating the apple in the early 1970s, honoring what orchards did for the local economy after the boll weevil hit cotton in the 1920s. The Georgia Apple Festival started as a small arts and crafts show and grew into a four-day event over two weekends, presented by the Ellijay Lions Club and the Gilmer County Chamber. 2026 was billed as its 55th.
